Once a month, I head to a bar not to drink. Boston Media Makers has its rectangular motley monthly at Doyle’s in Boston Jamaica Plain neighborhood.

As an aside, when we moved to JP over 20 years ago, we heard the same answer to where do you like to eat and where do you like to drink — Doyle’s. Hyperactive video-blogging king Steve Garfield started this video/film/blog/podcast thingummy, now in its second location after Sweet Finnish coffee shop died.

Maybe I shouldn’t mention BMM. It’s usually jammed. Yet, in a given month, typically a third of the folk at the huge set of tables are first timers.

7. For that matter, I miss Doyle’s, where Media Makers meets. Doyle’s is a Boston institution for politicians and JP residents alike, and serves a damn good pint of stout.

Dan Ronken writes a great post about the meeting, Attraction Trumps Promotion – Having a Blast with Boston Media Makers.

This was the most fun I’ve had at a ‘networking’ (that’s not even the right word, felt more like a gathering of friends) meeting I’ve ever attended. Our ‘three minute’ introduction consisted not of sales pitches , but was more about sharing valuable information or asking for advice.

Members of the group were then sending ‘real time messages’ via Twitter to their extended networks which has an immediate effect of reaching an audience of potentially thousands of people in a matter of seconds. I already knew that blogging generates business, but this is real time communication I’m talking about here. I want to emphasis, this is NOT about sales pitches, it’s about connecting with, and helping people.

Boston Media Makers meet the 1st Sunday of each month at Doyle’s Cafe in Jamaica Plain, join us.

This month I brought in some twitter t-shirts and backpacks from the 140 Conference I went to in NYC and this Web Around webcam background. Looks cool in the photo.

Everyone put in business cards and we randomly gave the things away. People liked this idea, so next month, bring in your trade swag and products you want to give away and we’ll redistribute them and save the planet.

At the meeting I showed the Eye-Fi Explore Video WiFi SD card using my Panasonic TS-1.

Disclosure: I am evaluating the Eye-Fi for my book, Get Seen. I won the camera at the Living in HD website. They are giving away 30 cameras this month. Enter to win.

The camera will send photos from the camera to Flickr when there is an open WiFi connection available. THe connection at hte time I took the photos was weak, so the photos did not get sent, but when I got home and turned on the camera, the photos I took at hte meeting were posted automatically to flickr.

Everyone had a great time at what Jeff Cutler called ‘Boston Media Makers at Night’. Jeff also interviewed people and asked them who their favorite America Idol contestant was.
